Sleep Dentistry or IV Sedation in North County San Diego (Carlsbad, Vista, Oceanside, Encinitas, San Marcos, Escondido)
If you have anxiety about dental procedures, or an invasive procedure which may require sedation, then you’ve come to the right place. Patients who undergo IV sedation, are able to sail through their procedure in what seems like a few seconds. You will begin by having an IV placed, usually in the arm.
After the IV is placed, we can administer the relaxing “sleeping medicine.” In a matter of seconds, you will be relaxing, while we will be operating comfortably. Please adhere to the following to prepare for your sedation:
- Do not wear nailpolish or fake nails to your appointment. If you wear thick polish or nails, it may actually prevent us from being able to perform the surgery.
- Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing, and a short-sleeved shirt. Doing this makes the IV placement easy and allows us to maintain the position of the IV throughout the procedure.
- DO NOT EAT for 8 hours before your surgery.
- Bring a responsible driver with you to the procedure.
The medication only takes about 30 seconds before it begins to work. Once you are comfortably sleeping, we begin the procedure. Part of the procedure includes using local anesthetic (numbing shots), so you won’t feel anything when you wake up.
It’s very important not to drive, operate heavy machinery or exert yourself physically on the day of the procedure. Keep your activity light for a few days and hydrate like crazy, especially with liquids which have electrolytes, protein, sugar, and nutritional value.
